House of 1000 Corpses

(R, 88 min.) After their car breaks down, two couples are stranded in a creepy old house. Murder, cannibalism and satanic rituals ensue. Shock rocker Rob Zombie makes his writing-directing debut with a schlock horror gorefest that Miramax ditched, apparently fearing it would receive the kiss-of-death NC-17 rating. With Karen Black, Sid Haig, Michael J. Pollard. Mercury Turkey Alert: Lions Gate Films didn't let reputable critics review this apparent Texas Chainsaw Massacre ripoff. Draw your own conclusions, horror-heads.--AA

The Streetsweeper

(NR, 105 min.) Paul Michael stars in writer-director James Hill's indie drama as a doting father who abandons his career as an operatic tenor and takes a job as a street sweeper. Later, he sacrifices everything to keep his son (Michael Cavalieri) in Harvard, unaware that the stoner student was thrown out of college in his freshman year. Melodrama, teeth-gnashing and an aria from Verdi's Il Trovatore (inevitably) ensue.--AA
