The King comes home, sort of

Is it his uncanny resemblance to the King, his vocals or just his sweaty scarves? No matter. Trent Carlini is a captivating incarnation of the rock 'n' roll legend. A performer in this city for more than a decade, Carlini is the first Elvis Presley tribute artist to play the house that Elvis built: the Las Vegas Hilton. Backed by a live band, Carlini's musical tribute, "The Dream King," is at the Las Vegas Hilton Theater through Aug. 3. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35.50-$46.50. Info: 732-5755.

Jimmie uh... folks the house!

Do you see the problem here? Rock is a noun and a verb. Rap too. Hell, even metal is at least a flashy noun. As much as some of us love folk, the word dredges up images of old guys in chambray shirts and dungarees picking away at a beat-up Gibson hollow body and whining about disappearing flowers. Folk fans must band together and find some hot, sexy label to survive in this pants-so-low-you-have-to-shave-your-pubic-hair world. We know just the place to talk this out. Jimmy Dale Gilmore, country-folk musician extraordinaire, performs at the Clark County Amphitheater at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the gate, which opens at 6:30. Info: 455-8200.

Even the little bunnies?

Destroy Everything plays Vegas this week. Come on, guys, everything? Isn't the horrible fact that the universe is rapidly suffering entropy enough for you? You have to actively--oh, it's just one of those punk names. Sorry. Anyway, Destroy Everything will be at the Double Down Saloon, 4640 Paradise Road, at 10 p.m. Tuesday night. No cover. Info: 791-5775.

Comedy coming out our ears

Comedy clubs come and go with alarming frequency in Las Vegas. This week we have yet another fresh one, plus an invasion. The Golden Nugget premieres the Funny Bone Comedy Showcase Friday at 9 p.m. Steve Schirripa, local hero from "The Sopranos," is booking the shows. So don't fuck around during the show or you'll wind up sleeping with the fishes. Tickets are $25. Info: 386-8100. Down at the Paris, primetime TV rolls into town to film "Last Comic Standing" at noon Tuesday. The smart money's on Dat Phan winning or being lynched. Tickets are free, but limited. Info: 946-4567.

Set phasers on `holy crap'

Oh sure, it's easy to mock the guys in spandex pants and their toy armor, but we're not even going to mention Siegfried and Roy this week. The second annual official Star Trek Las Vegas Convention comes to town this weekend and the roster of events and sci-fi stars it boasts is impressive indeed. In addition to most of the casts from all the incarnations of the TV show, you can look for Lorenzo Lamas ("Renegade"), Greg Evigan ("BJ and the Bear") and Alan Ruck, Cameron from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and a co-star of the sitcom "Spin City." The event starts at noon Friday and runs through the weekend. Tickets start at $31 with lots of other special pricing for special events, like dinner with the Klingons. Info: (818) 409-0960, ext. 225.
