Cowtown Chronicles

Denio

Pop.: 27

Industry: ranching

Nearest city: Winnemucca (pop. 7,000+), 100 miles south (and where everyone goes for groceries).

Distance from Las Vegas: 567 miles

Talk of the town:

It's a Friday afternoon, "81.8 degrees and breezy and perfect," says Peggy Silva. The random phone call surprises her, but she's friendly.

So, what's everyone talking about these days in Denio?

She thinks about it for a spell, then laughs. "I guess the biggest news here is the summer reading program at the library." They have a library? Yep, and a post office and a bar ("I never go there," says Silva), and a school where her 9-year-old son, Tevi, goes with a handful of other kids. Right now Tevi's reading Hank the Cow Dog. "Of course," says Silva, "everybody's into the cowboy thing here."

Not much going on in Denio. "I garden, I read, I crochet, I paint," Silva says. She adds that she's been job shopping--which might, sadly, mean a move to citified Winnemucca. Her husband runs a ranch north across the border into Oregon.

No other big news? "A friend of ours died the other day," Silva says. "But it was sort of a good thing, because he was old and wasn't doing too well." Well, what about the drought? "Oh yeah, we have a little problem up our way. Everybody wants water out of the creek, and we have fights over it. Yeah, it looks kind of bleak."--Heidi Walters
