Peanut butter and Nelly

Kurt Cobain claimed he knew he'd made it when Weird Al did a parody of one of Nirvana's songs. If that's what it takes, Nelly has made it. Not only the parody, but in honor of his show this week, the Palms has issued actual Nelly gaming chips. The chips put him into rare company with Don King, Benny Binion and Wizzo, the naked blue guy in a top hat from the MGM Grand. Nelly plays the Palms at 8 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $50 to $100. Info: 474-4000.

Architecture day trip

You know what? You need to get out of town this weekend. The cheap and convenient option is Mesquite, that outpost of rustic rurality and jazzy hotel-casinos on the Nevada-Utah border. But the reason to go isn't just for a round of golf or a day at the spa. You see, the Mesquite Heritage Museum and Art Center is holding its grand opening at 10 a.m. Saturday. Why is that such a big deal? you ask skeptically. It's because this new center isn't your run-of-the-mill government building. Designed by AssemblageStudio of Las Vegas, it's a cutting-edge exploration of a new architectural form starting to take root in Southern Nevada. Building around the original stone museum structure and using natural materials found in the area, Assemblage, led by Eric Strain, is attempting to create an indigenous architectural style for Southern Nevada, contrasting with the copycat motifs of the Strip. The Mesquite Heritage Museum and Art Center is at 15 Mesquite Blvd. Info: (702) 346-5295.

Viva la raza...umm...arto?

Okay, so we aren't all bilingual here at the Mercury. Hell, some of us are barely monolingual. But art is the universal language. Wait, was it art, or Esperanto? Anyway, the public is invited to participate in an artist forum and meet renowned Chicano artist Gonzalo Plascencia and local Chicana artist Lee Medina at the Hispanic Museum of Nevada. Plascencia is best known for his multiple image works celebrating Latino culture. Medina is a relative newcomer to professional art and Las Vegas. Bienvenida, Lee. An exhibit of her tri-dimensional paper artworks titled Layered Perspectives will be showing as well. The forum runs from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. The museum is located at 250 N. Eastern Ave. (corner of Eastern and Stewart).

So much for `size doesn't matter'

Exotic dancers compete beneath a huge phallic symbol every Thursday this summer. The Stratosphere is having a weekly pool party called "Wild Nights." The entertainment includes DJs spinning tunes and head-to-head competition among the city's hottest strippers. Keep it in your pants, boys. It's volleyball, karaoke and trivia kind of stuff, not brass pole-rubbing and banana-licking. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Admission is free for women and $10 for men. Hmph, well isn't that sexist? In fact, now that we think of it, the whole damn thing is pretty...oh, the Mercury is co-sponsoring it?

This astounding celebration of the bodies and minds of our city's unique performers takes place every Thurday from 6-10 p.m. The gentleman's cabarets compete from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
