Arrr matey, there be cultural treasure here The Cultural Corridor Coalition, which consists of seven cultural organizations in downtown Las Vegas, is having an open house/neighborhood festival/general wing ding on Saturday. The event will include guided tours, art exhibits, demonstrations, free admission to museums, a treasure hunt and more. All events are free and the public is invited for a rare chance to see city politicians not sniping at one another or fending off embarrassing inquiries from the FBI. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes the Neon Museum boneyard, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, Lied Children's Discovery Museum, the Old Mormon Fort, Las Vegas Library, Cashman Center and the Reed Whipple Cultural Center. Info: 229-5431.
Old metalheads never die... And sometimes they even refuse to fade away. Kip Winger, former lead singer of the mysteriously named metal band Winger, comes to town this week. He's trimmed off his poofy '80s 'do and is playing at the Palms' weekly Acoustic Asylum show, which features musicians in a mostly unplugged format. The show starts at 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Palapa Lounge and admission is free. Info: 942-7777
Where do you carry the chips? If you're somehow under the delusion that Las Vegas isn't the land of the weird, just take a gander at this picture. Yep. Gambling in the pool. That ain't going on at Barona Valley. Put that in your corncob pipe and smoke it, Kenny Rogers. Swim-up blackjack opens Saturday in the main pool at the Tropicana. Of course you have to be a guest but how else can you gamble, dogpaddle and ogle the opposite sex while slamming down a yard of frosty pink alchohol? It doesn't get more Vegas than this. The game is open for hotel guests from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Info: 739-2222.
T.C.O.B., tiny Elvis Rita Rudner recently celebrated her two-year anniversary at New York-New York. Oddly enough, she sent us this picture the same week we ran a picture of a baby Elvis on the cover. We want to say great minds think alike, but unlike Rita, we aren't on a billboard doing the splits. We tried. We talked funny for a week. End of story. If you want to see the very funny Ms. Rudner, she's playing Sunday through Thursday at 8 p.m., Fridays at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 7 and 9 p.m. except this particular Thursday, Tuesday and Wednesday when she's off. Got that? Tickets are $49. Info: 740-6815. |
