Thursday, October 09, 2003 2 AM: Club life with Meme Hsu
I recently have been accused of forgetting my priorities. I've been accused of losing my mind and not acting my age...to which I answer, quite vocally, "How old do you think I am?" (I'm 24, for all you nosy people.) It's amazing how people think that once you're old enough to drink, you should choose not to, and once you're able to choose a corporate life over one that you barely remember (after a night of club-hopping), that you should naturally want to choose the stable alternative. Where's the fun in that? Why can't we have our cake and eat it too? There's a time that we must face where young and new will become mature and established, and even that those two worlds will one day collide. Perhaps that time is now. But before you change out of your club clothes for a view of your front porch, let me explain.
New In the new club world, or at least at Ra, female DJs rule. On Wednesday, Oct. 15, Ra is holding an event I can't wait to attend, the "DJ Divas Tour." The tour will include Spacegirl, Valerie & the Vibe Tribe, Ariel Cybana and DJ Elz. These beautiful first ladies of electronic music are bringing their beauty, style and flair to Ra and are guaranteed to blow you away with their talent. Spacegirl, dubbed the "Queen of Acid Trance," born in Moscow, delivers an energy-filled techno/trance set that takes the listener on a musical journey through her mind's eye. Valerie & The Vibe Tribe prefer to classify themselves as a "free spirit." Their vision is to create "interactive multimedia dance performances" that are a hybrid between live electronic music acts, raves, nightclubs, and Vegas-style spectacles. Ariel Cybana's sound of tribal-progressive house, superb track selection and flawless mixing helps her to stand out from the crowd. DJ Elz takes '70s funk and schools it in infectious house rhythms to create shimmering, super-funky house and limb-shaking breaks. Established Only in a great city like Las Vegas do you get a mix of new and established artists. For instance, if female DJs aren't your thing, you'll be happy to hear my next tidbit. There's one name that everyone should know, and it's Grandmaster Flash. This is a man who should be put on a pedestal by every club devotee and worshiped as a DJ god. On Sunday, Oct. 12, make your way to Light at Bellagio to pay homage to him as he spins at the club. For those of you living under rocks, it's important to know that Grandmaster Flash is one of hip hop's founding fathers. He makes it into my history books for creating and establishing forms such as quick mix, scratching, breaks and cutting. His influences can be seen in DJs all over the world and heard in music from Funkmaster Flex, Kid Capri, DJ Scribble, Jazzy Jeff, Jam Master Jay and many others. If that doesn't get you out the door, consider this--the event is free for all locals! (Light at the Bellagio, 693-8300; DJ Grandmaster Flash, www.grandmasterflash.com)
New or established...it's all about having fun Tonight is a night full of possibilities. Break it down at Baby's, located in the Hard Rock, where DJ Gumby will be taking on DJ Adam Webb in the "Go Big or Go Home" DJ competition. Doors open at 11 p.m. Listen as DJ Gumby and DJ Adam go at it for $2,000 in the best competition of the year. (Baby's, 693-5555) If partying to live music is more your thing, drop in on all the local talent at The Beach, located at 365 Convention Center Drive. "Almost Famous," happening every Thursday night, is the place for local bands to show off their stuff. (The Beach, 731-1925) Rather go to a CD release party? Rush over to "Drenched" at Rain in the Desert. DJ Dave One X will be having a party for the release of his new CD, Liquid Funk. Stop by for the free giveaways! Free, I just love that word! (Rain in the Desert, 940-RAIN; DJ Dave One X, www.daveonex.com) Feel the need to see cute men and women dressed up? Is Halloween not coming fast enough for you? Head down to Bikini's on Friday, Oct. 10, for "I'm a Cowgirl Baby!" Saddle up at the bar and quench your thirst for hot bodies and sexy costumes. (Bikinis, 777-6582) Ice probably will be melting on Saturday, Oct. 11, from the hot sounds of DJ Pauli P. A favorite in the electronic music scene, Pauli P is a regular guest in Las Vegas, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. He has DJ'd with the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Moby, Hybrid, Sasha & Digweed, Grant Plant and Christopher Lawrence, among others. (Ice, 699-5528; DJ Pauli P, www.djpaulip.com) Wednesday, Oct. 15, you have a change to party with stars. A Source of Joy Promotions is throwing an opening night party for the cast of The Full Monty. Based on the record-breaking 1997 Academy Award-nominated hit of the same name, The Full Monty is the raucous and heartfelt story of six unemployed steelworkers who go to great lengths to make some cash and help out a friend in trouble. The show will be held at the Aladdin Theatre from Oct. 15-19. The party at Prana, located in the Aladdin's Desert Passage Mall, will begin at 10:30 p.m. Also expected to attend are cast members from the new Cirque show Zumanity, Celine Dion's A New Day, Mamma Mia!, Gloria Estefan and cast, the men of Thunder from Down Under, the X girls, La Cage and Jubilee. This is a chance to meet, greet, and network with our local entertainers and directors. No cover. (Prana, 650-0507) No matter how old you are, it doesn't matter, because we all party to the same beat! Music is our common thread; whether you're into techno and trance or hip hop and house, we all need to have fun and admit that "new" and "established" may be different but in Las Vegas we can all live harmoniously. Namaste. |
