Thursday, April 01, 2004 2 AM: Club life with Meme Hsu
Ahh...birthdays. Birthdays are a great reason to do stupid things and get away with it. "I can't believe you drank all that vodka!" "But it was my birthday." "Oh...okay." "Did you think dancing on the table at that club was a good idea?" "It was my birthday." "Oh...okay." What happens on a birthday...well, doesn't really stay secret. Don't be fooled, it will be repeated to your friends, family and children for years to come. Hopefully you will do it right and it will be called the party of the century. Take the director of marketing at OPM Branden Powers' birthday party. This is an example of how to do it right and make it memorable! Last Thursday I dropped by OPM for some birthday cake. Instead of kicking back and sucking down a few cold ones with his friends, Powers was running around making sure everyone else was having a good time. I think he did a great job because Jack and Kelly Osbourne could be seen laughing it up in the northwest VIP area as Harry Morton, the son of Peter Morton (owner of the Hard Rock), sang Queen and Journey songs on the karaoke machine. David LaChapelle, the world-famous fashion photographer, Kerry Simon, chef and owner of Simon Kitchen at Hard Rock, and Las Vegas Sun gossip columnist Tim McDarrah were kicking back with friends in their private booths. All the while I was dancing in the main room to some old-school girlie songs and talking to Tom, a radio DJ/complete hottie from MIX 94.1. If the night couldn't get better, there was a perverted monkey--yes, a real monkey came to the party--as well as a Hungarian strong man who balanced a motorcycle on his chin, a stilt walker (who I wanted to trip so bad) and a balancing act. It was definitely a night to remember. (OPM, 387-3840)
Birthday boy My little brother has some great friends. The kind of friends who would always back you up in a fight and stick with you even when you are wrong. I have been privileged to watch them grow up and become men. One of my favorite pretend little brothers, Charles Lim, is turning 21! So everyone needs to raise a glass on April 8 at 10 p.m. and give a toast to Charlie! There are so many great places I want to take him to. It will be hard to get him drunk at every club, but we will have to try. The night would probably start off at the Ghostbar at the Palms because he's been dying to see the view. (Ghostbar, 938-9999) Next I will probably have to take him over to Curve at the Aladdin because it has some of the best VIP service in town. It's the perfect place to start drinking. Not to mention the fact that I love playing pool in the VIP area. (Curve, 290-9582) Our next stop will probably be Ra at the Luxor. The music is always good there and the place is always packed. I think Charlie will love it because occasionally there are some great b-boys and b-girls tearing the place up. He will have to give them a run for their money. (Ra, 1866-725-8967) No matter what, I know the night will probably end at Seven. Seven is always a great place to end a birthday night because its after-hours always lasts until early the next day.
