A/E Highlights

Sneeze, and you die

Actually, Dar Freeland seems so peaceful, we're not sure what she'd do if you screwed up her sandpainting. But we'd rather not find out, because there's sure to be some sort of serious karmic retribution.

There are still a few of you who haven't hipped to the First Friday thing. The monthly event in the downtown Arts District includes art exhibit openings, live performances, open studios and assorted uncategorizable fun. At the Funkhouse antique store, there's the opening of Ode to Anger, works by Angee Jackson inspired by Kenneth Anger. Music is provided by folk duo Green, followed by acoustic band No Fret. There also will be art vendors, live art demonstrations, fortune tellers and a didgeridoo player.

At the Arts Factory, the Contemporary Arts Collective features the opening of Glow, with a meet-the-artists reception starting at 5 p.m. The Common Space features Guilty by Association, with works by local artists K.D. Matheson, Dray, Veks3 and others. Face Up Gallery will have illustrations by Brian Swanson and Flatline, new works by Dar Freeland. In the "X" room, Tony Tompkins will be showcasing a dozen items from his modern collection of photo art. At S2art, there will be live lithography demonstrations on century-old presses and new lithographs by Tom Everhart. There will be live music at Iowa Cafe, the Gypsy Caravan Antique Village, the Ice House and Dino's.

Pick up a map and a more detailed schedule at the Arts Factory at 101 E. Charleston Blvd. or the Funk House at 1228 S. Casino Center Blvd. The event is Friday from 6-10 p.m. with after-hours events going on till much later. Info: 678-6278 or 384-0092, or go to www.whirlygiglasvegas.org.

Quick! Valentine's Day is coming! Love meeeeee!

We've tried to ignore the Hurry Date concept. Lord knows we've tried. Screw quiet desperation. The big VD is just around the corner, and being alone while being bombarded by media coverage of hearts, flowers and romance just bites the hairy moose. For the three of you who haven't heard, HurryDate is where you get a bunch of singles together and line up at tables for eight-minute "dates." Then you change partners and do it all over again until you find somebody you can stand. It's happening at the Ice House at 650 S. Main St. at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Info: 315-2570.

We swear we are not making this up

Yes, it's an honest-to-God John Denver tribute act. Well, why not? You know he'll cover the biggies, "Take Me Home Country Road," "Annie's Song," "Thank God I'm a Country Boy," yadda yadda yadda. If he wants to impress us, however, he'd best be playing some of them there lesser-known but nonetheless dandy little ditties like "(Lay Me Down in) Forest Lawn" or "Grandma's Feather Bed." My oh my, what we wouldn't give to hear a faux Denver belting out a rip-roaring rendition of "Saturday Night in Toledo Ohio." Rocky Mountain High: A John Denver Tribute featuring Jim Curry plays at the Silverton Hotel, 3333 Blue Diamond Road, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $9.99. Info: 263-7777.

Yes, there is art on Boulder Highway

Okay, we get it. These guys don't just do graffiti and graffiti-inspired art. They didn't have to put on an all-photo exhibit to prove it to us. 5ive Finger Miscount presents Pictures and Photopaths, featuring the photography of Mary Newton, Rosie, Garald Todd (who shot this photo), Lenny Souza, Edgar Mullen, Chess, Shannon Dorn, Amy Sol and more. The show starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Katherine Gianaclis Park for the Arts at 5690 Boulder Highway. Admission and refreshments are free. Info: 226-2057 or 451-8608.
