Thursday, January 15, 2004 2 AM: Club life with Meme Hsu
I was talking to my friend, Matt, the other day and he said something that made me a little sad. It's something I hear from time to time, and every time it hits my heart like a dagger. "My girlfriend hates Vegas," Matt said. I'm a real Vegas girl. I was born in Sunrise Hospital and went to Las Vegas High School. I go out of town once a month but always come home loving Las Vegas more each time. You can take me out of Vegas, but you can't take Vegas out of me. I thought that perhaps she might be getting the wrong idea about Las Vegas and should get to know all the great places away from the Strip. There are a million wonderful things to do and see.
Beyond the Strip The JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort, Spa & Golf, at 221 N. Rampart, is a great place to relax and enjoy the company of those you love. On Friday, Jan. 16, it will hold a grand opening for Plush, an ultralounge. Plush opens at 10 p.m. and runs to the early morning. This new night spot offers two dance floors, multiple bars, private VIP areas, bottle service and a colorful eye-popping interior. The outdoor patio offers couches, pools and waterfalls. This new lounge offers one of the most beautiful and unique experiences you can have off the Strip. Cover starts at $15. (JW Marriott, 800-851-1703) The Whiskey Bar, at Green Valley Ranch Station, has some of the best off-Strip nightlife available. Whiskey Bar is an innovative and spectacular night spot featuring an eight-acre pool area. Whiskey offers private cabanas, day beds, flat-screen televisions and outdoor bars. The Balinese-inspired outdoor terrace offers guests 12x12 mattresses, sofas and swanky but comfortable lounge chairs and a breathtaking view of the desert skyline and the Strip. Here's the entertainment lineup for the next week: Thursday, Jan. 15, DJ Anthony Mazeika; Friday, Jan. 16, DJ Mike White; Saturday, Jan. 17, DJ OneZero; Monday, Jan. 19, Open Mic Night; Wednesday, Jan. 21, Reggae Night. (Green Valley Ranch Station, 617-7560; Whiskey Bar, www.mocbars.com, 617-7560) The Palms' Brenden Theatres are one of my favorite places to see movies. They offer stadium seating and have some of the cleanest theaters in town. After the movies, guests can visit Rain in the Desert or the Ghostbar for some nighttime fun. On Thursday, Jan. 15, Rain will present "Diva DJ Duo" with DJ Miss Joy and DJ Kriscut. (DJ Miss Joy, www.djmissjoy.com and DJ Kriscut, www.djkriscut.com, Brenden Theatres, 507-4849)
Early morning Monday nights haven't looked so good in ages. After partying at the Foundation Room, hit OBA at the House of Blues. OBA is a lavish VIP lounge atop House of Blues Music Hall in Mandalay Bay. The OBA Lounge features an intimate setting with plush VIP seating, bottle service and private elevator access. OBA also features some of the hottest DJs from the local music scene, and around the country. OBA late nights are: Mon., 4 a.m.-9 a.m.; Wed., 11 p.m.-4 a.m.; Thurs., 11 p.m.-4 a.m.; Sun., 11 p.m.-4 a.m. (OBA bottle reservations and VIP admission, 221-BLUE)
Cheers! Compliments of Whiskey Bar, let's toast the best city in the nation:
