A/E Highlights

Woo hoo! Happy green wooden monkey year

I'm sure green wooden monkey year means something to all the feng shui enthusiasts in hizzouse, but for us it's just a reminder that nothing's funnier than a smoking monkey. Painted green. Made of wood. On fire, or at least smoldering to provide lucky New Year's smoke. In celebration of the Chinese new year, there will be a concert at Mandalay Bay featuring Lydia Sum, Johnny Yip, Alice Lau, Alisa Chan and Danny Summer. You know you can't miss Johnny Yip. The show is at 10 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $48 to $168. Info: 632-7580

Rock me, Amadeus, except for the rock part

Despite the fact that Mozart would have preferred wild snogging and booze for his birthday, the Sierra Winds and the trio Cerberus will be celebrating the occasion by playing his music and eating cake at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Wolfie's party is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Admission is $8, while seniors, UNLV students and children under 12 pay only $6. A reception with birthday cake will follow the concert. Bring a party favor. Meanwhile, in the Elysium fields, the guest of honor will be drinking schnapps and playing "hide the Vienna sausage" under those giant, crazy 18th century skirts. Info: 455-7340.

Little ditty 'bout Jack and H.G.

I realize that for some of you this is going to push your willing suspension of disbelief to the limit, but just sit back and enjoy the play Time After Time. You can save your discussions of quantum mechanics and time stream paradoxes for another day. The play assumes that H.G. Wells didn't just write a novel about a time machine, he built one. Unfortunately, he discovers that his buddy is Jack the Ripper, who steals the machine and flees to the early 1980s where he becomes the half of Wham! that wasn't George Michael. Wells then chases him back to the future, where his mother falls in love with him and he has to rig a DeLorean to get hit by lightning. I may have gotten some of the details a little wrong but all you need to know is Jack the Ripper vs. H.G. Wells in a steel cage match to the death! This Jade Productions show runs Friday through Feb. 8, Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Summerlin Library. Tickets are $17.50 for adults, $15 for students and $13.50 for children under 12. Info: 263-6385.

Wait, these aren't collectible?

Sorry, folks. No matter how long you keep them, nobody is going to pay you a million bucks for your mint condition, double-bagged, acid-stabilized copy of the Yellow Pages. Assuming you haven't already round-filed it, you can still get some good use out of it. Sprint Yellow Pages, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, North Las Vegas Library District and Republic Services of Southern Nevada are joining forces to host the fourth annual Sprint Yellow Pages Recycle for Literacy event on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Clark County Library at 1401 E. Flamingo Road and the North Las Vegas Library at 2300 Civic Center Drive in North Las Vegas. For every directory recycled that day, Sprint Yellow Pages will donate $1 to the literacy programs of both library districts. The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District adult literacy program will receive up to $10,000 and the North Las Vegas literacy program will receive up to $5,000. To contact the Las Vegas-Clark County Public Library adult literacy program, call 507-3534. For the North Las Vegas Literate Community Program, call 633-1070. For more information about recycling, call Republic Services of Southern Nevada at 399-1112.
