Thursday, July 29, 2004 A/E Highlights
Hey Fogerty, explain this John Fogerty, formerly of Creedence Clearwater Revival, we have just one question for you. Could you please explain the following lyrics you sang? There's a giant doing cartwheels, a statue wearin' high heels Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn A dinosaur Victrola list'ning to Buck Owens Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon? Doo, doo doo We think we've figured out most of it, but we could really use some clarification of the second and third "doo" after "flyin' spoon." Fogerty is playing at the Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $53 to $128. Info: 693-5066.
Do they know Fogerty's in town? It's inevitable that with all the tribute bands playing here these days, this is going to happen. In fact, it's probably going to happen a lot. Second Manassas, a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band, is playing Vegas the same weekend as the original band's frontman. If John Fogerty decides to screw with their heads by showing up for the show, we predict they'll either piss themselves with joy or shit themselves from fear. Either way, you'll want to avoid the front of the stage or wear your Blue Man Group plastic poncho. They're playing 8 p.m. Friday at Roxy's Lounge in Sam's Town, 5111 Boulder Highway. Admission is free. Info: 456-7777.
Of course you know this means war It's a little-known fact that Henry Kissinger tried unsuccessfully to resolve the Vietnam conflict with a battle of the bands. The whole deal fell apart when it proved impossible to locate an electric zen xin (a stringed instrument used by the Hmung). WorldFolk's sixth annual Battle of the Bands will hit town this week. The festival is cruising across the country and will end here at the Cannery in October. This week local bands Jaggedy Ann and Doja, among others, will be competing. The show starts at 8 p.m. Friday at the Cannery at 1212 E. Craig Road. Tickets are $5 but you must be 21. Info: 507-5700.
Sure, but can they dance on the ceiling? Of course they can't, only Fred Astaire and Lionel Richie can do that. Why is that? The sixth annual Dance in the Desert Festival hits the CCSN campus at 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. this weekend. The event features modern and postmodern dance as well as classical ballet. Once again, our city's superlative pole dancers are being snubbed by the event. Hmph, we'd like to see Twyla Tharp pull off a 720-degree hands-free twirl and drop. Now that takes talent. Each show in the festival includes a half-dozen or more dance groups. Performances begin at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 for one show, $18 for two and $24 for all three. There are discount prices for seniors and students. Info: 651-5483.
Bile didn't make the list Oddly enough, neither did pus, mucus, urea or vitreous fluid. Of course, Blood Sweat and Tears, fronted by David Clayton Thomas, did, so that's who's playing at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Cannery at 2121 E. Craig Road. Tickets are $9.95 to $29.95. Info: 507-5700. |
