Thursday, March 25, 2004 2 AM: Club life with Meme Hsu
Sometimes going out to big clubs can get tiresome, so I decided to head out to Moose's Beach House across from UNLV last weekend. There was a recent change in management, so I was hoping that nothing had changed from the last time I was there. I walked in with my friend Jen, and it was as it always was. Moose's has always held good memories for me. I remember leaving a French midterm in my senior year at UNLV with my friends, running over to Moose's at noon and getting shots of alcohol to curb our thoughts of impending doom (which were our midterm grades). By about 1:30 p.m. (though I can never be sure of the accuracy of this story), we were all lit, dancing and carrying on like it was 1:30 a.m. and we had just left the clubs. Boy, I miss midterms. In any account, Moose's hasn't changed a bit. The decapitated moose heads are still on the walls, the pool tables still sit in the far back, the dance floor still beckons and although the staff has changed, it still is as nice as ever. Jen and I made it for happy hour. She sucked down a mixed drink as I enjoyed some great strawberry daiquiris with whipped cream. The best thing about the night was the bill. Most drinks are $2 and they don't skimp on the alcohol. So we were both intoxicated but not poor. Happy hour is seven days a week, from 4-9 p.m. (Moose's Beach House, 4770 S. Maryland Parkway, 798-0441)
Martinis anyone? Art has always been my passion, although I can't seem to afford any of it. In any case, one of my all-time favorite artists is going to be visiting this weekend. Michael Godard, currently on his "Naughty Artist Tour," will visit the Wyland Galleries in the Aladdin on Saturday and Sunday. If you get a chance to visit this weekend, you are sure to see some of the most interesting, funny and unique art available. His use of generally black backgrounds makes the colors and actions of his famous grape and olive dancers feel more alive and ready to leap off the canvas. His subjects are martini glasses, olives, grapes and wine. He takes drinking to a new artistic level. Godard visits on Sat., March 27, and Sun., March 28, from 1-4 p.m. (Wyland Galleries Las Vegas, Desert Passage at the Aladdin, 699-5363; Michael Godard, www.michaelgodard.com) Afterward on Saturday I will enjoy some delicious food and head to Curve for martinis. Two world-class DJs will spin in the multiple rooms, and, because it's Curve, I know I will have a great time. (Curve, 290-9582)
Saturday is too far away Can't wait till the weekend? Today at Risque at Paris is Charles Feelgood's birthday and CD release party of The Dirty Bird. Feelgood was active in the birth of the electronica music scene in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas. Feelgood has built a solid reputation as a DJ in the international dance music community through his ingenious remix skills and dynamic brand of funky disco house. He sums up his musical mission thus: "I just want to make people have a good time and go home with a great feeling." The opening set will be by Keith Evan. (Risque, 946-7000) Meanwhile over at Drenched at the Palms, DJ Rags will host his own CD release party. The CD is Re:Loaded. Stop by for free giveaways. (Rain in the Desert, 938-9999; DJ Rags, www.djrags.com) Wednesday nights at the Hard Rock is Interlude. Listen to dance, house, hip hop and lounge music spun by DJ Dig Dug. Doors open at 11 p.m. (693-5000) |
