Thursday, March 25, 2004 A/E Highlights
As Howard Dean said, 'Yeeeeaaaah!' It's spring, the flowers are blooming, the navel rings are back out from under the shirts and lunatics are shouting that "Skateboarding is not a crime," despite the fact that these guys are flagrantly defying the laws of gravity. The Extreme Thing Sports/Music Festival takes over Desert Breeze Park at 8275 Spring Mountain Road on Saturday. Aside from hundreds of EXTREME SPORTS GUYS doing EXTREME SPORTS THINGS, there'll be bands and venders and more. Tickets are $15 through Ticketmaster or $20 at the door. The event starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 10 p.m. Info: 310-318-8995.
G'day, which one's Pink? The Australian Pink Floyd Show. We wish we'd made that up. The Australian Pink Floyd Show. The mind reels and a thousand Crocodile Dundee jokes race through our heads. Another brick in the wall of rock 'n' roll's mausoleum. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the House of Blues. Tickets are $25 to $35. Info: 632-7600.
A philanthropic bargain Yes, Vegas Unites Against Domestic Violence is a good cause. That's a no-brainer unless you happen to be Bobby Brown. But if that's not enough to convince you to shell out the bucks, think of it as a Vegas showroom sampler. The six-hour show features performances by Lance Burton, Frankie Perez, the Scintas, La Cage performers and lots of other musicians and comedians. It starts at noon at the Clark County Amphitheater at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. Tickets are $20; kids 10 and under are free. Info: 839-4327.
Live from...uh...Primm Janis Ian was one of the musical guests on the first episode of "Saturday Night Live." She's a soulful lyricist, a proud lesbian voice and, strangely enough, an apologist for and proponent of Howard Stern long before the FCC got all over his case. All this leads to the inescapable question: What the hell is she doing in Primm? Maybe Primm is hipper than we thought, or maybe she just wanted to check out the Bonnie and Clyde death car. She performs at 8 p.m. Thursday at Whiskey Pete's. Tickets are $22.50. Info: 386-7867.
Curiouser and curiouser A close reading of Alice in Wonderland reveals a bizarre and complex story, yet people continue to kick it up a notch to this day. Jefferson Airplane's drug allegories and that creepy Dreamchild flick a few years back with a hallucinating octegenarian Alice come to mind. Add to those J. Spencer Formby's play Always an Alice, in which Alice is forced to choose sides when her sister tries to impose democracy on Wonderland. It goes on at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at Las Vegas High School, 6500 E. Sahara Ave. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 per family.
Yo! G-Lo, where's Ben? These days, it's the goal of the average comedian to get a sitcom, sit back on his haunches and soak in the bucks. Then, between shooting the show, he can tour, packing the house with his newfound TV status. Mission accomplished, George. Now you just have to make it through seven years so the reruns can go into syndication. George Lopez plays the Las Vegas Hilton Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m. Tickets are $45 to $55. ënfo: 732-5755. |
