GIRL POWER: Nothing goes together quite like string bikinis and rowdy tugging games, and in that spirit, the Hard Rock Hotel will host a bikini contest and tug-o-war on Fri., May 14, at 3 p.m. to benefit City of Hope, one of the world's leading research and treatment centers for life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Tickets are $20, and anyone interested in sponsorship or forming a team should call Michele DiPerno at 933-3704.

CANDLE POWER: On Sunday, May 16, the Clark County Health District will observe the 21st annual International AIDS Candlelight Memorial with a vigil in the courtyard of Christ Church Episcopal on Maryland Parkway. Although plain, white candles will be provided, participants might consider a rhinestone candelabra to honor Las Vegas entertainment legends lost to the devastating disease. 2000 S. Maryland Parkway, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Info: 759-0726.

FLOWER POWER: Summer is right around the corner and members of the Shundahai Network are once again protesting at the Nevada Test Site in an attempt to reclaim the land for the Western Shoshone Nation. They will be gathered there until Sun., May 16. For maps and information, go to www.shundahai.org. And remember: Never doubt the power of a drum circle to end war forever.

LATINO POWER: According to a recent census, the population of North Las Vegas is more than 37 percent Hispanic, which means that Oscar Zeta Acosta's so-called "cockroach people" could have some serious hand when it comes to politics in Northtown. In order to encourage electoral participation, the city will host four two-hour meetings that will cover registration procedures, basic knowledge of U.S. government and general voting information. The first is scheduled for Wed., May 19, from 6-8 p.m. at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive.
