ACLU deserves praise for fighting dress code

As the state chairman for the Independent American Party, I would like to once again thank the ACLU for standing up for the God-given rights of religion, press and speech as it fought for suspended Liberty High School junior Kim Jacobs.

Jacobs had refused to live by Liberty High School's "New American Atheist Civil Religion" Dress Code that did not allow her to wear a T-shirt that contained both religious and political speech. GOOD FOR HER. We should all stand up against such tyranny! We should all question authority and remember the words of Thomas Jefferson that "Dissent is the HIGHEST form of patriotism."

The schools have become NO SPEECH zones where students are required to leave their religion and political beliefs at the door while they are crammed full of blind obedience training by those who would send them to foreign wars to fight for oil after a good dose of sensitivity training for illegal aliens who steal the tax dollars that were to go to Nevada children's education.

Thank God for the ACLU.

Writer who dissed Billy Joel needs help

You have someone on your staff, if I understand all this correctly, who recently wrote something on Billy Joel's 1977 album The Stranger [Replay, Nov. 4]. Carey Murphy was the author.

I'd just love to know whose kid this is that someone made a job for. That's about it. This person has no class whatsoever. I hope this person finds another line of work or gets some professional help, whichever comes first.

They enjoy putting other true artists with talent down, so I hope this person is reading this--or gets to. They are the "fool for shit," in their own words.

Nevada State College needs its own campus

The vast majority of states have successful three-tier higher education structures that serve their students well. When Nevada State College at Henderson was founded, our state joined this national, well-proven three-tier system. To go backward and combine our state college with the Henderson campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada would be a mistake to our primary UCCSN goals of providing quality diversified education to Nevada.

The brilliant minds who make up the leadership in Henderson have set forth the plan to meet state college educational needs for the long term by forming this school. The well-qualified staff at NSCH and CCSN recognize it would not be prudent or educationally sound to combine the two campuses.

Nevada State College staff and students are poised to move Nevada higher education to the next level. To stand in their way would be simply wrong. All the college needs is a permanent president committed to stay with the excellent staff and develop the college for the long term. When this happens, the college will flourish even more into a shining superstar we will all continue to be proud of.

You owe obscure comic actor an apology

I don't know who on your staff wrote this article ["Well, He's No Joe Piscopo...Thank God," A/E Highlights, Nov. 3], but they obviously don't know what Mr. Tim Kazurinsky has been doing lately. Besides doing a fantastic job in guest roles on television shows such as "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "According to Jim" and "Still Standing," he's had many emcee jobs, i.e., the Midwest Emmy Celebration. Then there's the new comedy network that he, along with other notable celebrities such as Garry Marshall, Bill Kurtis, Charna Halpern and Steve Zacharias, are starting called "Standup Comedy Television." But most notably, Tim's greatest accomplishment is his screenplay, Strange Relations, which was nominated for various writing awards such as the BAFTA and Writer's Guild Awards. That movie, in fact, gave the wonderful Julie Walters a BAFTA award for Best Actress.

So just because someone is working behind the screen as a writer or producer does not mean his career is any less significant. I think you owe Mr. Kazurinsky a huge apology. Next time, I advise that you first get your facts straight!
