A/E Highlights

Slightly partisan art

Well, we guess no one promised a fair and balanced art show. On Saturday (Sept. 11), 5ive Finger Miscount will present "Be the Revolution," a one-night-only art show with a decidedly Dubya-bashing slant. Speed voter registrars will be on site to sign up new voters as well as educate people on the importance of their involvement. Artists include Limp Bizkit cover artist Mear One, Iceberg Slick and the Mercury's F. Andrew Taylor. The show runs from 5-11 p.m. in the common space of the Arts Factory at 101 E. Charleston Blvd. Info: 226-2057

Beware their terrifying pink balls

Paintball once was a game played in the woods by 'Nam vets, cops and vaguely psychotic guys living out their "Most Dangerous Game" fantasies. Now it's a sport played in arenas by rock stars, celebrities and vaguely psychotic guys living out their "Most Dangerous Game" fantasies. The Super 7 World Series of Pro-Paintball takes place at Sam Boyd Stadium this weekend. It includes a trade show and expo where you can buy all things paintball as well as see more than 160 teams blasting the crap out of each other. The event runs today (no actual games until Friday) through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free or you can pay up to $45 for better seats or a VIP pass, including free booze. Info: 714-536-9261.

Picking it like a motorist at a stoplight

Honestly, what is wrong with us? Here we have a chance to write about Muriel Anderson, a hell of a finger-style guitarist. And we go for a snot-mining joke. Never mind that she'll be performing a tribute to her teacher, the late, great Chet Atkins, because apparently we think it's too important to fill your head with visions of nose goblins. We're very sorry. Anderson will be playing at 7 p.m. Friday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Tickets are $15, $10 for students and seniors and $7 for members of the Guitar Society, Las Vegas Jazz Society and Southern Nevada Blues Association. In addition she'll have a workshop from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at. Tickets for the workshop are $25, and space is limited. Info: 455-7340.

Fairer sex? Shya! Right

Great gobs of geronimo gravy, there's more muscle on those legs than in the entire Mercury office. They could crush our wee pallid necks with one well-placed flex, and frankly, we can think of worse ways to go. La Femme is much like the show that has been running at the Crazy Horse in Paris for the past 50 years or so. The show goes on at 8 and 10:30 p.m. nightly. Dark Tuesdays. Tickets are $59. Info: 891-7777.

That's a heap o' mariachis

And that, friends, is just the proverbial tip of the mariachi iceberg. There'll be more guys in tight pants and goofy vests than you can shake a piñata stick at during the Mariachi Conference and Festival this weekend, one of many events timed to coincide with Mexican Independence Day. There will be workshops from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a concert at 8 p.m., all at the Henderson Pavilion at 200 S. Green Valley Parkway. Tickets are $5 or $20. For the extra $15 you get a chair. Info: 267-4849.

A current affair

Comedian David Brenner, who bases his comedy on current events, has set up shop at The NightClub at the Las Vegas Hilton indefinitely. Normally, this is the part where we good-naturedly mock the celebrity but frankly, we're at a loss. Brenner is a workhorse comedian who has preformed scads of times on "The Tonight Show," has headlined and toured for decades and remains fresh and topical. What are we going to make fun of? The fact he intentionally toured the nation's comedy clubs after the 9/11 attacks to bring healing laughter to as many people possible? Oh, wait! He's got a pretty big nose; we could make fun of that for a while. Eh. Never mind. David's okay in our book. He appears at 8 p.m. Friday through Wednesday. Tickets are $55. Info: 732-5755.
